EU India seminar on migration governance

The EU India seminar on migration governance addressed areas of mutual interest, including the Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility and brought together stakeholders from government entities, public and private sectors, academics and civil society.

The event was inaugurated by Sh. Sanjiv Arora, Secretary (CPV & OIA)  Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India who explained that the expression ‘migration and mobility’ in a composite way, includes transfer and sharing of technology; trade and investments; knowledge and information; and of course, human resources. In today’s world, the term ‘brain drain’ is an anachronism – it is, in fact, brain circulation that presents a win-win situation for both sides.

Speaking at the event, EU Ambassador Kozlowski said, “the dynamic EU-India partnership which gathered increased momentum through the new EU strategy on India adopted in 2018 envisages a more conducive atmosphere for increased people-to-people ties. Migration governance and mobility is in the interest of both sides.”

Ms. Paraskevi Michou, Director General, Migration & Home Affairs, European Commission, reiterated the EU’s commitment to contribute to the EU-India relationship by the exchange of good practices in the area of migration. She also highlighted the European approach which is encompassed by a very comprehensive and holistic agenda covering a multitude of areas.

This seminar is being organized under the overarching framework of the strategic partnership between India and the European Union, of which the Joint Declaration on a Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility [CAMM] between India and the European Union and its Member States, signed on March 29, 2016, is an important dimension.
