The speech of Dr Dimitrios T. Vassiliadis on “The Sanskrit Language and its Greek Scholars” at the Gennadius Library (Photos & Video)

The Hellenic-Indian Society for Culture and Development and the Friends of the Gennadius Library Association, organized on April 15, 2024 a talk on “The Sanskrit Language and its Greek Scholars” in the Cotsen Hall Amphitheater of the Gennadius Library.

The event was opened by the director of the Association of Friends of Gennadius Library Ambassador Mrs. Aikaterini Boura who referred to the historical speech of Ioannis Gennadius on Indologist Dimitrios Galanos, a copy of which was exhibited together with other works of Dimitrios Galanos in the reception hall.

This was followed by the keynote address of the Indologist Dr Dimitrios Th. Vassiliadis, the first part was about the historical development of the Sanskrit language from antiquity to the present day, and the second was about the Greek scholars who studied the Sanskrit language from the time of Dimitrios Galanos to the present day. At the end of the talk, Sanskrit student Ms. Voula Bolou recited in Sanskrit the Agni Sukta, the first hymn of the Rig Veda dedicated to the god of sacrificial fire, Agni.

The event was closed by the president of the Gennadius Library, Dr. Maria Georgopoulou, who referred to the research work of Ioannis Gennadius on the ubiquitous Hellenism, as well as the archive of the late Indologist Miltiadis Spyrou. which was donated to the library by his son, Athanasios Spyrou. The archive is available for the younger scholars of the history of the Greek community in Bengal who would like to make use of it.

The lecture was attended by members of the Association of Friends of Gennadius Library, as well as scholars and students of philology and Indology who had the opportunity to meet and exchange views at the small reception that followed in the courtyard of the library.
