MESSAGE BY AMBASSADOR DIONYSSIOS KYVETOS ON MONDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2021 AT THE ONLINE INAUGURATION SESSION

Good Evening,
Professors
Ladies and Gentlemen

I am pleased to learn that the Greek Chair at the Jawaharlal Nehru University is organising this Online Winter School on Greek language, culture and civilization, and, I very much appreciate their kind invitation to me to be a chief guest for the inaugural session today. However, I express my apologies for not being able to join as I am presently in Mumbai on an official visit.

Dear friends, India and Greece have developed great civilizations since thousands of years and their legacies in subjects as vastly different – as mathematics to epic poetry, engineering to philosophy, from sculpture to mythology, from astronomy to culture – speak for themselves.

The interaction of our two great civilizations, through thousands of years, continues in our days. And this, because we both originate from a common cradle, with common principles and values. These contacts date back centuries, from the time when very few civilizations determined the future of our world.

Both our Nations, both our cultures, in their own way, but equally through their fruitful interaction, have strived for the ascendance of the human spirit. Our belief has been that every individual is unique and has his own potential which he must realize through an educational experience wherein ethical values, understanding and respect for others must from the core of his character.

I wish Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, who holds the Greek Chair, all success in his endeavour to bring so many eminent scholars and academicians together to discuss and debate the legacy and various aspects of Greek civilization and its importance.

My hearty felicitations to you all, and I hope that after this Winter School you will always keep Greece close to your hearts!

Thank you.
Dionyssios Kyvetos
Ambassador of Greece to India
