Official visit of the President of Greece Kostis Stefanopoulos to India

The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Kostis Stefanopoulos, paid an official visit to India from January 12 to 18, 1998. The purpose of the visit was to promote the trade and cultural ties between the two countries.
Mr. Stefanopoulos was accompanied by Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos, Undersecretary of National Economy Athanasios Baltas and a multi-member business delegation, and met with his Indian counterpart Mr. R. Naragianan, the Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral and other politicians of the country.
During his stay in India, Mr. Stefanopoulos visited the Greek church and the Greek cemetery in Calcutta as well as the Taj Mahal in Ankara.
In a special event organized by the Greek Embassy in the Oberoi hotel in New Delhi, the President met with politicians, businessmen and academics and awarded the honorary medal of the Golden Cross to Prof. U.P. Arora for his contribution to the promotion of Greek studies in India.
