Dhrupad music concerts in Athens, Sparta and Crete

Two musicians, a Greek and an Indian, invite us to an acquaintance with northern India’s most ancient form of music, Dhrupad, traditionally associated with the subtle practice of the yoga of sound, Nada yoga.

Nektarios Mitritsakis and Nikhil Ghorpadkar will introduce us to the sounds and melodies of two important musical instruments, Rudra Veena and Pakhawaz respectively, which are considered to be the most ancient instruments of India and a source of inspiration for many later ones. The Rudra Veena is the most ancient stringed musical instrument of northern India and the ancestor of several modern instruments, the most familiar of which is the Sitar. The same is true of the Pakhawaz, which is considered the ancestor of many percussion instruments today such as the Tabla.

The event will begin with an introduction to this form of music, its relationship to the human body, breathing and sound as a means of healing. This will be followed by a duet with Rudra Veena & Pakhawaz, based on Raga & Tala (melody and rhythm) and in the second part there will be an introduction to the rhythms of this tradition through a solo Pakhawaz playing along with vocal phrases to accompany it.
