Official visit of the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Eleftherios Avgenakis, to India

The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Eleftherios Avgenakis, is making a three-day official visit to India from November 2, 2023, following an invitation from the Indian government. The visit of the minister takes place as a continuation of the agreements and discussions that took place in Athens, during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and the memorandum of cooperation between Greece and India that he signed with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Friday, November 3rd

In the morning, the Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, representing the Greek government, attended the opening of the International Exhibition of Food and Manufacturing Products “World Food India” in New Delhi, which was held by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Leading international and Indian food and processing companies of the primary sector are taking part in the Exhibition.

During the day, the Greek minister had a meeting with the Union Cabinet Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, and with the Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Piyush Goyal. The meetings took place in an excellent atmosphere and, among other things, discussed issues related to the development of cooperation in the field of agro-food products.

Discussions with the Indian ministers focused on the creation of a Security and Origin Center, in a Greek port, for the import of Indian products to Europe and the Middle East. The purpose of this Center will be, among other things, the certification of the safety and hygiene of Indian foods imported into Greece and the EU. Greece is positively considering the provision of advisory services.

As pointed out by Minister Avgenakis, Greece and India have common values and interests and this is a strong basis for strengthening trade relations in the field of agri-food, between the two countries.

The Greek Minister held a meeting with the Union Minister of Food Processing Industries,  Pashupati Kumar Paras at the Bharat Mandapam.

He also had a meeting with Indian businessmen active in Greece at a reception organised by the Greek Embassy in New Delhi.
