The first Greek traders who sought their fortunes in the East, outside the sphere of the Ottoman yoke, settled in Bengal during the eighteenth century. Part of the considerable emigrant movement that followed was the author’s family, relatives and friends and she, herself, was born in Karachi and lived in Calcutta during her early childhood. Making use of personal interviews with surviving members of the Greek communities, the author records their memories and describes the main historical events of the times which marked the life and their works in India.
