DEMETRIOS GALANOS: RAGHUVAMSHA OR GENEALOGY OF RAGHU

by Demetrios Galanos (1760-1833)

The Raghuvamsa or Genealogy of Raghu (Gr. Ραγγου Βάνσα ή Γενεαλογία του Ράγγου) (pages xcv + 275) is the first translation into the Greek language of the epic work Raghuvamśa by the most celebrated Sanskrit poet Kālidāsa (5th century AD).

The Sanskrit epic (mahakavya) narrates, in 19 sargas (cantos), the stories related to the Raghu dynasty, namely the family of King Dilipa and his descendants up to King Agnivarna, who include Raghu, Dasharatha and Rama.

The fourth in a series of Gananos manuscripts (Ms. No. 1849) was published in Athens in 1850 under the custody of the Commissioner of the Public and University Library George N. Tipaldos and the Librarian Georgios Apostolidis.
