Assessing Tourism Potential in India

Secretary-General of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) George Koletsos visited India ( August 29 – September 3, 2011) on a mission to assess the tourism potential and prospects. The World Tourism Organization predicts that by 2020 India will “export” 50 million tourists. A visitor from India spends an average of over €2,000, while the majority of Indian visitors travel in April to June and October to December. Indian tourists travel mainly for leisure, conferences, and business.

An increase of Indian visitors to Greece would do much to extend the tourist season and increase per capita tourist spending. There was a presentation of the strategic development and competitiveness of Greek tourism products, while concrete proposals for promoting them in the Indian market were presented and discussed. In a meeting with representatives of the Greek Embassy in New Delhi, the possibility of speeding up the visa process was broached, which is a strategic priority for action to further market development.
