During his life-long research on the Greek community of Bengal, Indologist Dr. Miltiadis Spyrou discovered several letters that Demetrios Galanos had published under the pseudonym “Philanthropos” in Calcutta newspapers at the beginning of the 19th century.

Based on these letters, as well as on the discovery of Galanos’ tomb in Benares and the British records that mention their proposal to appoint him as the first foreign Principal of the Benares Sanskrit College, the excited researcher tries to sketch the socio-political psychograph of the pioneering Greek Indologist who lived most of his life in India and translated important texts of the classical Sanskrit literature into the Greek language.

The research of Miltiadis Spyrou brings to light new elements of national and sociological importance as the letters of Galanos focus, on the one hand, on decisive events of the Greek revolution that is on fire, and on the other hand, on deep, intractable problems of Indian society. Galanos was not a secluded scholar, as it was believed until now, but he wholeheartedly supported financially, but primarily with his pen, the liberation struggle of his compatriots, while at the same time, he promoted the ideas of enlightenment and defended human dignity in India.

The President of the Academy of Athens, Prof. Michael Stathopoulos, launches the first copy of Miltiades Spyrou’s book on D. Galanos and congratulates Dr. Dimitrios Vassiliadis and the Ambassador of Australia Mr. Arthur Spyrou on its publication.
