Greek-Bangladeshi collaboration for the video-song “It’s Mother Language Day”

A video-song dedicated to the International Mother Language Day was launched on February 16, 2018, at the Music School of Ilion. The lyrics of the song, titled “It’s Mother Language Day”, are written by the Bangladeshi author and poet Sujan Debnath who currently serves as First Secretary & HOC at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Athens. The music is composed by the Greek musician Stavros Papastavrou, who also plays guitar and sings together with the Bangladeshi singer Nibedita Nath.

In the video, students from the Music School of Ilion and members of the Bangladeshi community in Greece, as well as from other countries including Australia, China, Brazil, Ethiopia, USA, Spain, Estonia, Netherlands, and Bangladesh have taken part.

The song is a tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement in Bangladesh (the then East Pakistanis). and is expected to become viral on social media during the celebration of the International Mother Language Day on February 21.

21st February was declared to be the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO in 1999 and it is observed every year on the same day throughout the world since February 21st, 2000.
