Peter Brook, the legendary theatre director of Mahabharata, passed away
Peter Brook, a world-famous theatre director, died in Paris on July 2, 2022, aged 97.
The British director, who had been based in France since 1974, left behind an incredible artistic legacy with numerous distinguished productions ranging from challenging versions of Shakespeare through international opera to the Sanskrit epic poem Mahabharata.
The original 1985 stage play of Mahabharata was the result of eight years’ work by Peter Brook.
The nine-hours dramatization of the classical Indian epic was an attempt to transform it into a universalized art, accessible to any culture. The theatrical play was presented in several countries around the world for four years. In 1989, it was reduced to under 6 hours for a TV mini-series.
Peter Brook was awarded in 2021 by the President of India the Padma Shri civilian honour, for his valuable contributions towards art.
