An International Conference on:

“The Greek World and India: History, Culture and Trade from the Hellenistic period to Modern Times (4th c. BCE – 18th c. CE)”

will take place

from 12 to 16 of December 2022 at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Convention Center.

The conference is organized by the Greek Chair “Dimitrios Galanos” at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post Byzantine Studies (Venice) and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece in India.

The aim of the Conference is to bring to the forefront the most recent research on the interaction, communication and influences between the Greek World and India from the period when these were at their peak, following Alexander the Great’s quest into Asia, until Modern Times. It is a firm belief of the organisers that exploring past aspects of the 2500 years-long history of Indo-Hellenic contacts could open new ways of promoting and enhancing current relations between the two nations. Within this context, the Conference will aim at focusing particularly on the following areas of research, by means of distinct panels consisting of specialized scholars and researchers:

1.     History and Contacts
2.     Numismatics
3.     Art and Archaeology
4.     Science and Philosophy
5.     Commerce and Economy
6.     Geography
7.     Hellenistic Period in India – The Greek Kings of India
8.     Greeks in Indian Literature
9.     Indians in Greek Literature (Ancient, Byzantine and post-Byzantine).

The Conference will also include the digital exhibition of a rare unique byzantine manuscript with a large number of miniatures which depict the life of Alexander the Great. Visitors will have the opportunity to see these miniatures and to go through and admire the manuscript’s pages through the use of state-of-the-art digital media.

The organization of this international conference is part of the steady course of strengthening and developing the relations between Greece and India, and it was proposed by H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Mr Nikos Dendias during his visit to India in March 2022.

Greece and India are bearers of two of the greatest civilizations in history, which came into close contact over the centuries, having extensively and for a long time interacted and even blended with each other on various occasions. In addition to that, the two countries also share vibrant democratic institutions and resourceful societies, respectful and tolerant towards other cultures.
