Modern Greek Language Studies at the Vellore Institute of Technology (Tamil Nadu)
The teaching of the Modern Greek language was introduced for first time in December 2019 in the Department of Languages, School of Social Sciences and Languages at VIT Vellore. Now the Greek language is being taught alongside with several other European languages such as French, German, Spanish, Italian and Eastern languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and Tamil.
The course (offered as an elective, theory-based semester course of 2 credits, corresponding to 24 hours of lectures with compulsory attendance) received a very warm welcome and enjoyed a large participation among the students: to the present date, 59 students from 1st to 4th year of their B.Tech. successfully completed their Midterm and Final exams. Due to the COVID-19 emergency, the next batch is going to start online classes from July 2020, with a total class strength of 70 students.
The faculty in charge is the Assistant Professor Jacopo Mosesso, an Italian philhellene that completed his graduate studies in Modern Greek language and literature under the guidance of Professor Paola Maria Minucci, from “Sapienza” University of Rome, and is now pursuing his PhD with a thesis on contemporary Greek poetry at the University of Cyprus, under the guidance of Professor Michalis Pieris.
